Andhra Pradesh wedding means a Telugu
wedding. Andhra Pradesh has majority of Telugu speaking people.
Their wedding comprises of various
rituals and the ceremonies take several days, in fact it is an
elongated affair.
There may be certain variations in
respect to ceremonies; however, the institution of wedding has the
highest regard for the Telugu community.
Their pre-wedding rituals initiates
with the Muhurtam that determines the auspicious part of the marriage.
The auspicious time is 7 pm and goes
till the next day 11 am. The Telugu wedding is done as per the old
customs and procedures.

The Telugu weddings are not held in the
Aashad, Bhadrapad as well as Shunya months as they are considered
auspicious. The next is the Pendlikoothru, where the bride and the
groom are smeared with oil and turmeric and after a bath are don with
new clothes.
This is followed by the Snathakam ceremony
and involves the groom wearing a silver thread on his body. The Andhra
Pradesh wedding has a series of rituals and the Snathakam is followed
by the most joyful ceremony Kashi Yatra.
This is a tradition where the groom
pretends leaving for Kashi, a pilgrimage and he is persuaded to lead a
household life and he agrees to marry.

The Andhra Pradesh wedding is enjoyed
by the Telugu people and in fact any observer as well. Each procedure
looks fascinating.
The Kashi Yatra is followed by Mangala
Snaanam an auspicious bath to cleanse and purify the couple for the
sacred rites they have to follow.
The Telugu wedding, though a lengthy
procedure, none of this community wants to forgo any procedure. This
Snaanam is followed by Aarti; this ceremony is carried with family
prayers that the couple be illuminated by happiness and wisdom.
This is followed by Ganesh as well as
Gauri Pooja seeking blissful marriage life with God’s blessings.The
Andhra Pradesh wedding rituals are full of colorful and joyous rituals.

Another very significant part of the Telugu
wedding, in fact the Hindu wedding is the Kanyadaan, where the maternal
uncle of the bride carries her in a basket and the priest invokes
blessings of generations of both the families and offers the daughter.
This is followed by the Jeelakarra Bellam
where the Cumin seeds and jaggery are mixed signifying the inseparable
feeling of bitterness and sweet times.
This is followed by another set of rituals
such as Sumangli, tying of Mangalsutra, kanyadaan Akshata, Saptapadi
and the post wedding rituals are the Grihapravesh and uniting the
mangalsutra. All these traditions for a Telugu wedding.
