Goa is a destination that is famous for its beaches. Apart from these beaches, there are other monuments that can be visited. The entire state of Goa has a long history.

There are several historical monuments in the state to prove this claim. Most of the Goa monuments were built during the Portuguese rule.

Unfortunately, many such monuments of Goa have been destroyed by the passing of time and today, only their remains are left back to leave us thinking about the structure of such monuments.

Apart from Portuguese buildings, there are a very few edifices dating to the pre-Portuguese era. Most of these monuments are safely preserved and protected by the Goan Government as well as the Archaeological Survey of India.

There is also an Archaeological Museum at Old Goa. There are many monuments in Goa like Reis Magos Fort. It is located on the River Mandovi to the northeastern direction to Fort Aguada. The Reis Magos Fort was built in the year 1550.

This fort is comparably small, yet it stands majestic and imposing. This Goa monument is preserved very well and still has 33 guns. There is also some space for a tiny garrison. There is a church of Reis Magos at the base of this fort.

Monuments in Goa include the Aguada Fort. The imposing structure lies at one end of the beautiful beaches. It is the best maintained forts in Goa.

This was built in the view of guarding the entrance of the Mandovi River. It acquired its name from various freshwater springs that is present on its site. Today this place houses the state prison.

An old lighthouse stands amidst the fort and is a real Goa monument as it earlier housed the Great bell of church St. Augustine. The Idalcao’s Palace is also one of the oldest buildings that are surviving in Panaji today.

This was a fortress basically and then was the viceroy’s palace. Among the monuments in Goa the Azad Maidan is a piece of land which is now dedicated to a prominent freedom fighter of Goa.

The Municipal garden is a popular called after a physician who spent his life sorting Indian herbs and worked for Indian and European medicine.

In the centre stands a Vasco da Gama statue and is a wonderful Goa monument built to commemorate the discovery of India through sea route. Today, the statue of Vasco da Gama is in the state museum at Goa and in its place the Ashoka pillar is erected.
