Wedding is always a heavenly ceremony as it represents the amalgamation of minds. There are several types of wedding in the world. One such type of marriage is the Goan style of marriage.

A Goan wedding is different is some aspects. In a Goan Christian marriage, the proposal comes from the girl’s family.

The girl’s family and their relatives visit the homes of prospective grooms with proposals of marriage. If every detail is found to be satisfactory, the girl and also her parents meet the groom.

The next step of a wedding of Goa is that the bride and the groom meet in the proposer’s presence in the home of a relative.

The bride and the groom meet in the presence in of elders for the first time. If their consent is given, then the wedding can be finalized and the preparations for a Goan wedding begin. The bride and groom are given more time to decide, if they fail to decide at once.

After they are engaged, they can meet anywhere without any restrictions. A wedding in Goa is always different from a wedding in any other part in Western Europe as there are certain elements of Goan life involved in the wedding that make it interesting.

Goan wedding includes, church, reception hall, wedding car, caterers and various other arrangements. The expenses of the wedding in Goa are shared by both families.

The groom’s family provides the bride her wedding finery that comprises of her wedding gown, handkerchief, veil, purse and shoes.

Traditionally, the groom’s parents take money and this amount is sent one day before the wedding. The groom’s mother also demands gold or articles to be given, but the recent generations have eliminated this tradition.

The Catholics marry according to the colonial laws. A marriage certificate is produced by the Civil Registrar.

The wedding in Goa is done in the typical style by reading the church service for three Sundays consecutively. This is done to know if there is any objection and also to protect the interest of both the parties.

Once this process of 3 weeks goes smoothly, the girl’s church gives a no objection certificate associated with marriage certificate and birth certificate. The Goan wedding also includes Hindu weddings.

They have the typical stages of Sakhar Puda, where the marriage is fixed, then the Marriage ceremony, where the marriage is done in a mandap. This is followed by Laxmi Narayan Puja and lastly the Kanyadaan.
