This Mauryan emperor was fond of annexing
neighboring kingdoms. He reached Kalinga, the then Orissa, and invoked
the ruler to a battle. At that time, Kalinga was administered by a
princess who was forced to fight in the absence of her father.
The battle was an absolute human massacre.
This important event in Orissa history moved Emperor Ashoka to such an
extent that he never fought another battle in his life. The history of

to 2000 years and is the ancient Kalinga capital.
The city of temples, Bhubaneshwar is
named after Tribhuvaneswar. It preserves more than 500 finest temples
of India and the religious city has mythological references.
Orissa became an individual province
in 1936 and eventually changed as Bhubaneswar in 1956.
Today, Orissa history has taken a new
turn by associating Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar forming a golden
triangle.
There were many archaeological finds
of the 7th to 13th centuries. Its sanctity led the rulers to embellish
the entire area with temples for eternal abode.
