Weddings are some of the greatest
ceremonies for any human being.
There is no ceremony that can match
the happiness, the jubilation, the satisfaction and the sanctity that
reaches the epitome by a simple function called wedding. There are many
styles of weddings in the world.
Each of these styles of weddings has
its own customs and they greatly differ from each other. The same case
holds for Orissa weddings.
They are totally different when
compared to the other styles of marriage that are present in India.
This is because the whole land of
India is a land of great diversities. This makes a wedding in Orissa
highly interesting.

The native people believe in simplicity and
effectiveness. For this reason, the Orissa weddings are not very
expensive; they are very down to earth. The most intriguing part of the
native weddings is the fact that the mother of the groom takes no part
in the wedding.
The marriages of the Brahmins are held
during the daytimes while that of the non-Brahmins are held during the
evenings or night. A wedding in Orissa is similar to most Hindu
marriages but at the same time, it is different in its own aspect.

The Orissa weddings follow ritually
and are a remarkable feature. The wedding is simple and elegant.
Once the marriage is fixed the
initiation of rituals begin. The invitation cards are sent first to the
family divinity and the next goes to the maternal uncles of the bride
as well as the groom.
The brides and the groom’s father
take oath to get their children married.
Wedding in Orissa begins with the
turmeric paste applied to the bride’s body and the ceremonial bath.
This is a paste of sandal and
turmeric. The bridal Saree, Sindoor and toe rings are offered before
the lord and the blessings are invoked for a happy married life.

The groom arrives at the wedding venue on
the baarat and the bride comes well dressed in fine traditional
jewelry. The bride comes dressed in orange, red or pink outfit. The
Orissa wedding rituals begin with Kanyadaan ceremony.
This is a ceremony of handing the daughter
to the groom. The couples take seven rounds symbolizing the fire as
witness of their marriage. The bride is considered as Goddess Laxmi who
brings abundance of wealth.
She tosses the rice on the path and spills
grains on the threshold of her home. The wedding in Orissa is done in a
simple and peaceful manner. After the bride enters her husband’s house,
she is given sarees and jewelry.
