Punjab Dances

Punjab is an abundant land filled with large hearted people and always full of life.

The green fields, good food and hard working men as well as women are some things that come as reflection to mind as soon as you think of Punjab.

This is one of the salient characteristic natures of the Punjabis. Their significant characteristic moves in accordance to the beats of Bhangra.

Punjab dances are one of the features of this state. They sing and dance while in work also.

Dances of Punjab are famous all over the world and the dances and songs are an integral part of their culture. None of their events or occasions are begun or completed without songs and dances.

The most popular dance of Punjab is the Bhangra and has acquired popularity throughout the entire world. The beats are catchy and the tempo of the music makes you move from the place. This has become a very popular dance and Daler Mehendi has brought it to focus.

Originally, Baisakhi was the only festival when Bhangra was danced. Punjab is rich with regard to dance as it has many folk dances. Bhangra and Giddha are famous Punjab dances. Basically, Bhangra was performed to celebrate the harvest success and now it has become a part of receptions, wedding parties, competitions, birthdays and almost all happy occasions.

The dances of Punjab are very lively with large drums, dhols and people laughing and leaping.

The elders and the youngsters take part in dancing Bhangra. Giddha is a famous folk dance where women enact the verses of folk poetry and dance.

This rhythm is set by dhols and hand claps. The Punjab dances very much reflect the folk heritage.

It is graceful and the dancers circle the drummer and sing lyrics gracefully. Luddi is a dance with special movements and the body movement in this dance is typical like a snake.

Dankara is also one of the Punjab dances where men hold colorful staves and dance in rhythm to the drums, tapping their sticks.

6:21 PM 8/26/2008 This dance is a part of the marriage celebrations. The dances of Punjab also include Sammi, a dance now performed in Pakistan. For this dance, women wear bright colored kurtas and flowing skirts. Identical to bhangra is another dance called Dhamal where men dance in circles.

Jaago is a dance performed in marriages and the themes of these songs are usually aimed at teasing elders. Kikli and Gatka are also two dances. Gatka is done using swords, daggers and sticks. This is a Sikh martial art while the Kikli is performed by women in pairs by crossing their arms and whirling singing folk songs.
