The history of Punjab is rich with a
long history as well as opulent cultural heritage.This region was
invaded as well as ruled by several different races and empires.
This includes the Aryans, Greeks,
Persians, Afghans, Egyptians and Mongols. History of any place brings
out the depth of that place, its fitness to survive and the way it has
come through these magnificent years and the reminiscences such as
forts, tombs and monuments mark the significance of the history of a
region.
The Punjab history has seen various
ups and downs and this was the state that sacrificed many lives during
freedom struggle.
The Punjab history revolves around the
15th century when Guru Nanak Dev established the Sikh religion that
came to prominence and very shortly Punjab was reformed into a powerful
and secular state by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

The history of Punjab saw the initiation of
the British rule in the 19th century. This led the emergence of many
heroic freedom fighters and in 1947; the British rule came to an end.
This was the time when Punjab was split amid Pakistan and India.
Punjab is a land of epics and a very ancient
civilization. Even today, you can see some places that signify this
state has been around for many years and is a land of ancient
civilization.Punjab is the cradle of the Indus valley and the
excavations reveal evidences of Harappa and Mohenjadaro cities.

Mahabharata narrates about this rich
land as being socially and culturally prolific.
Punjab history is interesting as it is
believed that evidences of Ramayana are found near Amritsar and few
great historical discoveries were unearthed.
The relics flash light on the
culture. Later, another thousand years the history of Punjab is
subjugated by the Aryans.
It is believed that Rig-Veda was
written here.The Punjab location was frequently attacked by Persian
rulers.
The Greeks were the rivals of
Persians and this is the reason that Greek maps have the mention of the
Punjab Rivers and its tributaries.

The Punjab history took a great change when
Alexander of Greece crushed the Persians and ruled Punjab. He asked
everyone to submit their authorities, all did it but for King Porus.
This resulted in a big battle and King Porus won Punjab back by his
talent of words.
In the second century BC, the white Huns
established their rule and with the birth of Islam, Arabs advanced to
this land of five rivers. Later the Sikhs ruled Punjab and many
followed the teaching of Guru. The Gurus constructed the Golden temple
in gold and after the death of these Gurus, the Sikh governors began
fighting for supremacy and the British took over.
British successfully ruled Punjab for 200
years and after the Jalian Wala Bagh incident, in 1947, the history of
Punjab took a freedom turn and was divided amidst Pakistan and India.
